Boulogne’s Charming Cobbled Streets
We sometimes associate a city Breaks Europe with cramped flights and baggage restrictions. However, crossing the English Channel in the comfort of your own car has made this a more pleasant journey. Why not pack your bags and head to Boulogne sur Mer, Saint-Omer or Mimoyecques? If you’re feeling adventurous, you could make this a longer trip and make your way to all three towns.
Boulogne sur Mer is only a short drive away from Calais. This is the country’s largest fishing port, so a visit to the fish market is a must. If you like French food, be sure you visit 43 rue Thiers. Here you will be able to try over 200 varieties of cheeses. The town has a good market which is held in Place Dalton. Place Dalton is found in the historic part of the town. The cobbled streets make this town quaint and charming. You will be able to stock up on a lot of fine French food. All these purchases will make travelling via Eurotunnel all the more satisfying.
If you like history be sure to head to Saint-Omer. One of the most fascinating historical facts about the town is that it was built on marshlands over 1300 years ago. {The town’s biggest highlight is La Coupule Museum}. La Coupule museum has on show Hitler’s top secret weapons known as the V1 and V2. In addition, the museum gives an insight into life in the country during the Occupation of France. Cathedrale notre-Dame de Saint-Omer must also be one of your stop-off points. It took over three centuries to build and is a national monument of France.
Whilst you’re in Northern France be sure to head to Mimoyecques. Here you will be able to visit Mimoyecques Fortress. It was built by the Nazis during World War II to hide their latest weapon called V3. This weapon was designed to completely write London off the map!
