"The traveler sees what he sees. The tourist sees what he has come to see." – GK Chesterton

Away from the tourist route

Increase your travel experience does not necessarily mean that travel to all small towns there. Instead of being curious sociable and asking people you meet all kinds of questions can give much in return. Approaching people themselves usually contact "ordinary people" as opposed to resellers who often approach you with different offers for the sole interest of getting as much money on effective as possible.

Near the beaten track

Not always have to be far from experiencing extraordinary things. Just walking in a randomly selected direction can lead to surprising encounters of all kinds. Perhaps you have been guided by a group of children who want to learn better English, or perhaps a proud farmer of snuff will teach the basics of the crop.

Do not be afraid to ask people to explain what they are doing or you can join them. You will be surprised how open and friendly people to such requests. Many people be glad to get to show your work or hobby to someone else. The pride and vanity may be important factors. You have spent a fortune to get there, so that do not be shy!

Being close to the beaten path can mean you choose more than the standard tourist excursion. As an example, intends to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, there are several different routes to choose from. Instead of joining the bandwagon after the "path of the Coca-Cola" (so named because everybody uses it), there are a number of other less-traveled routes. For example, the Rongai route which comes from the side of Kenya offers great scenery and almost no other tourists.

Outside the roads can also mean traveling backpacker style in a Charter of destination. In addition to screaming children and old ladies with blue hair, beware that there may be restrictions though. In Nassau, Bahamas, for example, is not allowed in the country unless you have a hotel reservation. This can be arranged at the airport, but leaves little room for spontaneity. Or to see what the rooms look. If you must do reservations directly, try to stay for one night.

Personal experience – Courtesy of Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung, Taiwan in 1996, I and some friends had heard of a factory that was built supertankers. We took a taxi there, but found a walled and a bunch of guards. But instead of being discouraged talk to one of the guards called for the manager. When he heard we were interested in shipbuilding proudly offered to the factory and took us to a tour of the area in his own car!

Personal Experience – The Miracle Magadi

In 2004 I was deeply in Kenya Maasai land, where not many tourists venture. I hitchhiked with a freight train to a small town called Magadi. I asked some students on the train if they could recommend a good hotel and looked at me saying, "There are no hotels in Magadi." But the anxiety gradually soon left me as one of the boys offered me to stay in their family cabin. I spent three days living with the Masai and was guided around the surrounding area. Even a goat slaughtered because of me (against my will). I still have contact with three of the boys and talk to them on the phone occasionally.
