The Secrets of Success: Your Steps to Success Are Your Greatest Adventure
Picture two types of people. On one hand you have the dashing adventurer type – think Indiana Jones. They’re bold, daring and they’ll stop at nothing to reach their goals. And they live one heck of a life doing so. On the other hand you have the quiet, cautious type, content with playing it safe. Their lives won’t be memorable, but at least they won’t experience any failure. Of course, standing still is failure, but they don’t know that. So, which type of person would you like to be? And better yet…
What kind of person are you right now?
Although most will tell you they’d like to be the adventurer type, they more aptly fit the cautious description. The masses seek out – not adventure – but escapism and security. They value staying within their comfort zone. They need to know what’s around the next bend because uncertainty is so frightening. And their lives reflect these values. Because they don’t accept and take on risk, they don’t reap the rewards. Because they fear the unknown, their lives reflect what Henry David Thoreau called, “silent desperation,” with drudgery and mediocrity as the norm. Does this describe you? Does the life you’re living reflect your dreams and aspirations? If not, then…
Climb that mountain!
You’ve likely heard the Diana Ross cover of the song “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” The chorus goes,
‘Cause baby, there ain’t no mountain high enough
Ain’t no valley low enough
Ain’t no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you, babe’
That song is an apt metaphor for creating success in your life. Do you let obstacles deter you from achieving your ultimate life? Or is there no mountain high enough to keep you from getting what you want? What limits do you place on yourself? Do you see risks or do you see opportunities? And you must ask yourself, what do the successful envision? Those who create their lives see life as an adventure. They respect fear, but do not become its slave. They know the rewards they’ll realize by crossing a wide river are much greater than any risks. Why? Because an entire world of opportunity awaits them on the other side. They don’t question themselves. They just take steps, big and small, because they know they won’t get to the top without moving forward. If you’re not moving forward, you’re stagnating. Is that really what you want?
Get comfortable with educated risk
When an adventurer climbs a mountain they accept and embrace the risks they face when doing so. But a good adventurer educates herself so those risks are minimized. Just as someone who dreams of starting a business educates themselves to lessen risk, they move forward knowing that risks still exist but they’re better prepared to handle any obstacles when they arise. Just don’t get caught up in the idea that you need to be prepared for everything. You’ll never get anwhere with that idea. The successful know that embracing educated risk is all about prepping yourself just enough to take that first step into unknown territory. Don’t get caught in analysis paralysis!
A key secret to success: take that step
The successful are going to find a way across that river, even if it means they jump right in and come out wet and smiling on the other side. It’s all part of an adventurous life. But it all begins with taking a big leap. It might be an educated leap, but it’s a leap nonetheless. You don’t have to live a life of mediocrity. You and you alone create your life. It is 100% what you make it. When you realize this – fully realize it – you are a lifetime ahead of most people. And once you understand you can shape your life just the way you want it, you then know you need to take that leap. Really, what’s stopping you but you?
An adventurous life is one of daring, educated risk and action. And it’s packed full of rewards and memorable moments the likes of which the masses will never realize. Now that’s a life worth living, don’t you agree?!
