Backpacking? Rocky Mountain National Park, hands down. Lotta visitors to the park, few camp, even fewer backpack. A few miles off the road gets you away from the crowds. Not away from everyone, but the scenery is worth it. You may need reservations, because it’s that good. June or September would be better for crowds than July/August.

Car camping? Nederland area, maybe Rainbow Lakes.
“Six miles north of Nederland off Highway 72, then left on turnoff for University of Colorado Mountain Research Station. Six miles to campground over a poorly maintained, bumpy road. Rustic. Wilderness access. Open late May through early September. 18 sites. USFS fee. (800) 280-CAMP.”
