How easy is it to travel through Southern and Eastern Africa by yourself?
My 32 yo brother wants to know this. I know there are some things he would need to do in a tour, such as a gorilla trek. The other option is to travel as part of a bigger tour for the duration. He has 2 months off in December/January, what are the must do’s while he is there?
I travelled around east africa last year and it was amazing!!! Situation a bit different im 21 female so i would never do it alone. A group of 4 of us did it, we travelled in Tanzania, Uganda , Kenya and Rwanda. Tanzania- absolutely amazing country relatively safe as far as e. africa goes i climbed kili – best thing ive ever done but pricey, zanzibar is a must do stone town is full of culture and theres loads of great relaxing beaches etc. Ngorogoro crater great for safari etc.
Uganda – we went white water rafting down the nile in a place called jinja, absolutely scared the living day lights out of me but was amazing- kampala was great too, steeped in history, north is more dangerous than the south.
Rwanda- I loved rwanda – that sounds a bit odd but it is a country recovering and doing its best to get back on its feet, people are wary but like everywhere in east africa totally welcoming. It is an absolutely beautiful place and i fell in love it and its tenacity, i found surprisingly it is a very united country. In kigali there are obvious things to do like the genocide memorial etc gorilla trekking in prc des volcans is a must too!!!
Kenya- sadly a few troubles here recently but its getting back on its feet and i dont think it should be avoided. Nairobi is like a western capital you could be in London. Travel out a bit – Naivasha is beautiful, as is lamu and mombassa.
There are dozens of touristy safaris that can be done in the masai mara or the serengeti but i would recommend smaller parks like amboseli or the samburu and lake nakuru in kenya- you see the same but its less like a british safari park and more like africa.
There is so much to do he will easily fill 2months my only absolute must i suppose is to see the real africa- dont just do the tourist things, go to the schools, the orphanages, meet real people as that would be what makes the trip much more than just a holiday
