Im going hiking, can anyone help me with a checklist of stuff i need?
Where and how long?
The most important gear is your brain. You should study a topo map of the area (and take it with you), and be aware of any nasty stuff i.e. wild animals, bad plants, bothersome insects. Of course you need weather appropriate clothing, and bring a fully charged cell phone if there is service in the area. If you get lost it’s easier to call for help than to find your way out. Know basic land navigation, and if you are hiking for more than a day or in rough territory bring water, food, and shelter and have knowledge and tools to procure all three items in case you run out or lose your rations.
Weather appropriate clothing and footwear is crucial.
I have a good knife, a lighter, a loud whistle, ID, extra cash, and a good compass on my person
I carry a backpack or messenger back containing:
-extra clothes, especially socks
-poncho and liner
-basic first aid stuff
-some paracord
-one of those metal survival blanket things
-maybe some snacks
The longer I’ll be gone I’ll add a shelter and a metal pot and some other stuff. But the most important thing is always your mind. Second most important is good clothes and a knife. Chances are you won’t get lost, but if you do you need some helpful knowledge and a cool attitude. It’s also a good idea, if you are hiking more than a few miles, to give somebody responsible an itinerary of sorts. If you get lost (and you pretty much stuck to your plan) it will be easier for rescuers to find you.
