Where is a good place for cabin camping near DFW (Dallas Ft.Worth)?
I’ve got the bug to do some camping, but my Fiancee is not the camping type. I’m looking for a cabin with a bed, bathroom and shower within around a 5 hour drive of DFW. I assume this would include parts of TX, OK, LA & AR. It would preferably have an area where a camp fire is permitted, and be near a lake and/or wooded hiking trails. I’ve been searching online but have not had much luck finding what I’m looking for. Has anyone had any experience with cabins in this area? Thank you for your help!
Hi…I think you would really enjoy the areas around Caddo Lake. It’s like no other, and yes, I agree with the other answer that said it was like the bayous of Louisiana. Caddo Lake shares a border with LA. The Texas side is near the Jefferson/ Uncertain/ Karnack area. I live in East Texas about 30 miles from Caddo and just love going over there.
You mention wanting to find an area that permits a campfire, but if you get a cabin in the State Park, I’m pretty sure you aren’t allowed to start any fires out there. However, there are quite a few privately-owned rental cabins all around the lake and many are water-front and some even offer extra nice perks like a canoes, rowboat, bicycles, etc. I’ll get you a website that gives listings of many cabins and some general info about the area. Just to let you know, I’m not sure about there, but many counties in Texas are in an official burn ban right now due to dry conditions and you can’t start a fire at all. I think in our eastern section, the burn bans are generally south of I-20. Most of Caddo Lake is in Jefferson County (Texas side) and it is north of I-20 so you might be fine. Now would sure be a good time to go (weather-wise) as it’s not so hot that the mosquitoes have been a problem yet.
I’m thinking it would take you about 3 1/2 hours down I-30 from DFW to get to there. Sorry, I’m not familiar with the LA side of the lake at all (but I plan to find out soon!)….Go have some fun!
