Important tips about day hiking
There are many benefits of going a on a one day hike close to home, listed here are just a few:

When planning your day hike expect to walk about 10 to 25 km (6 to 15 miles) on average. That will depend on your level of fitness of you and your colleagues, the terrain and maybe the weather.
As this is only a one day hike your pack can be lightweight as you only require a few things.
You will need some healthy snacks, your lunch and a cushion or plastic bag to sit on during lunch. Many hikers are also lightweight stools with telescoping legs to relax on during stops. You need a hydration pack or a few water bottles particularly in the summer months. Most hikers do not drink enough on the trail and studies have shown that you are more likely to consume more if you bring sports drinks.
Some other things you may carry in your pack include sunscreen, sun glasses, insect repellent, first aid kit, GPS (or compass) map and cell phone for emergencies. If your route takes you into a wilderness area also consider a survival kit which may contain matches, emergency blanket and some extra food. In some regions bear spray is also a good idea.
Hikers all dress in layers so they can make changes to regulate temperatures. You start with well broken in hiking boots or shoes along with your socks. Whether you wear long pants or shorts, a long or short sleeve shirt or gaiters depends on personal preference, the weather and taking precautions against the sun or ticks. Any outdoor wear is generally suitable along with a lightweight jacket, rain gear and a wide brim hat.
Optional items can also include hiking (trekking) poles, binoculars and a camera.
You are now ready to set off down the trail on your day hike. Afterwards you can sit at the coffee shop or pub and discuss your adventures with your friends.
