hiking shoes review
What is a good POS system for my small retail store? Quickbooks Pro?

I run a small retail store, only 4 employees. We sell everything from hiking shoes and apparel to baked goods. We will need to buy two full pos systems as there is an upper an lower register in the gift shop. I’ve been reading mixed reviews on Quickbooks Pro POS but can seem to find any alternatives. Can someone please recommend a point of sale system for my shop?
The main important features for the POS system is ease of use for the cashiers as well as inventory tracking.
and as many statistics as possible… Reliability of the software as well as support would also be important.

Ryan:

Finding the right POS system requires a bit of diligent work, but your post shows that you’re on the right track. First, you recognize that you need to support a variety of types of goods and you are aware of a few features that are important to you. Secondly, you recognize that you need quality support. Expand on both of these a bit, and you’re sure to find a POS that is a great fit.

Let’s start with features/functions. Expand your list of features and functions that you want by reviewing the websites of several differnet POS companies. For example, you can get a preliminary list here http://www.rapidpos.com/gift-shop-pos.html#. In particular, open the brochure link on that page and you’ll find a ton of things to add to your wish list. Another good approach is to watch on-line demos so that you get a good feel for how easy a system is to use. We sell two different POS systems and both have demos available here: http://www.rapidpos.com/download.html

You correctly recognize that service is important. The best service is offered by someone who does POS systems in your area. That way they can come on site as well as support you remotely. Ask for and check references and visit stores where their POS is installed. The other approach is to buy QB POS from Dell or HP – - your support will be inexpensive, but will likely come from inadequately trained techs in India. Local guys will, of course, be more expensive. As about their support contracts.

So, I hope this helps. The links I provided allow you to see at least two POS systems other than QB, and there are tons more out there. I also hope I’ve clarified your options that are available for support. Good luck with your search!!!
