Will it be safe travelling to Hawaii in May, considering the flood situation?
We will be visiting Oahu and Kauai. Seems like various places in these 2 islands are currently flooded and have flash flood warnings. Can anyone advise me whether the situation would improve in May, i.e., is this a yearly phenomenon that improves by May? If not, would it be dangerous travelling (driving around in cars, hiking, etc.) during a flodd watch? I am watching PDC websites, but I just wanted personal opinion from other travellers/locals/experts.
Aloha! As the others mentioned, this weather we’ve had recently is highly unusual. Today our weather is back to being gorgeous. Sunny and the tradewinds are blowing. The month of May will be beautiful and just before our summer begins and it starts to get hot!
While hiking, be sure to let someone know what your plans are and which trails you plan to hike (e.g. hotel staff, friends who live here). Stay on the trail!!! Take lots of water, a light jacket, snacks and charge up your cell phone in case you need it! A little compact mirror or flashlight will also come in handy. My hubby works on the Fire Department Rescue team and he’s amazed everytime he has to go look for people how unprepared they are.
Have a good time! Stay safe.
